“One of my first niche sites was a financial blog promoting alternative investments. I started publishing in-depth, evergreen content that I hoped (with time) would rank in search results.
The site slowly started to rank in the SERPS for some target keywords. It took a while before earning any commissions, but kept at it. After about six months of blogging, it earned an affiliate sale that paid just over $2,000. I couldn't believe it.
Until then, I only had a few small wins with low ticket items, so to net $2,000 from just one affiliate sale, I almost fell out of my chair.
The following month, the blog earned another commission – again over $2,000. This was when I realized affiliate marketing was something I had to take seriously.
Some tips if you’re just getting started:
Look for high-paying affiliate programs: Find products that you know, like and trust that pay (at least) a couple of hundred dollars commission on each sale. It’s a lot easier to earn an income when you’re netting $200 a sale, versus raking in a few dollars.
Find affiliate programs with recurring commissions: Some companies pay affiliates monthly commissions for the lifetime of their referrals.
Focus on publishing evergreen content: This is content with consistent search interest over time. Post a video or article today, and it can continue to generate sales for years.
Create content with the goal of building your authority vs. focusing on keywords. Keyword research is important, but Google is also looking for expertise, authority, and trustworthiness (EAT) in the sites they serve search queries. If you want to succeed as an affiliate, become the expert in your niche.
