The same is true when you're job-hunting. If you don't follow up with potential employers after an interview, they will forget about you and move on to the next candidate.
So how do you strike a balance between being patient and being persistent? It's all about making sure that your follow-up is meaningful and relevant. If you reach out to a potential employer a week after your interview and ask them if they've made a decision yet, that will not impress them.
But if you send them an article about the industry, or you wrote, that shows that you're still interested in the position and doing your research. As long as you're making meaningful contact, you should continue to follow up until you get a yes or a no.
